About Gertjan Miedema

This is a website of Gertjan Miedema's photos. I take photos for my own pleasure, and I have done so for about 40 years. My father was an enthusiastic amateur photographer. Looking around, seeing and photographing is a natural habit of mine.
I am interested in a wide range of subjects. I enjoy photographing people, making a striking portrait I find a nice challenge. Roaming the countryside, and recording what is appealing to me I find equally rewarding. Desolate places, like a deserted factory, a bleak industrial estate, or a dilapidated residential area are holding a great attraction to me. Rowing photos are a specialty. I am also interested in more technical photography, such as reproduction and macro. I enjoy seeing the beauty of everyday objects around me, and try to capture their beauty.
I photograph with Canon cameras and lenses. I also regularly use old manual focus lenses on my camera. Such as old German Carl Zeiss Jena lenses of the 1950-1970 period. Because those lenses have a different quality, a character of their own that appeals to me. I sometimes take pictures with a lens from an old Kodak Folder. Or I use a Casket Lens Set of an antique wooden camera. Exploring their properties and character, I use them to create images with a different character.
I find it a nice challenge in itself to adapt these old lenses to my camera. In order to explore their properties, and to use them to create images with a different character.
Sound and electronics are my other passions.
I worked as freelance film sound recordist for film and television, mostly documentaries.
